Paul I was written by many artists, Russian and foreign, but the image system was always the same – officially binding with the majestic attributes of the monarch of power, the heavy magnificent splendor of the mining mantle and gold costumes sewn with gold. Stepan Schukin managed to avoid pompous ceremonies and revealed the contradictory character of the most extraordinary monarch of Russia. Conceived as ceremonial, he, nevertheless, can hardly be attributed to this area of painting so unexpectedly and original his decision.

The portrait is extremely simple – no curtains, crown and scepter. In empty space is a lone figure in the uniform of Colonel Preobrazhensky Regiment with an officer cane in his hand. But the laconic compositional simplicity is saturated both colorful and spiritually. With great taste, Schukin writes a muari tape, a scarlet collar, gold sewing, diamonds – reaching exquisite picturesqueness here. But he pays the main attention to the person written in complex gradations of pink, pale blue, greenish tones, giving the image the necessary tactile and at the same time a shade of something painfully fake. The subtlety and difficulty of understanding the royal model is striking, which can only be surprised at the artist who dared to be so independent in the image of the monarch. The portrait with some naked truth captured the image of an unlucky autocrat.

The history of the appearance of the work is also interesting. Having entered the throne, Paul wished to immediately have his own formal official portrait. We found some kind of portraitist-French who demanded a very large amount for work. Count Orlov reported this to the sovereign, and when the latter angrily remarked: why there is an academy when there are no painters, – Orlov immediately went to Stepan Schukin. He agreed to write a portrait for cheap relatively with the request of the Frenchman price (3000 rubles). The artist presented two preliminary sketches: on one Paul is an AFAS, in a hat, with a thick cane in his hand; another represents the sovereign by riding a horse. The emperor approved the first sketch. After some time, the work was ready and Paul liked so much that Schukin received not only the title of academician, but also the Order of Vladimir IV degree, as well as a lot of money – six thousand rubles.
