Elagin Ivan Perfilievich (1725−1794)-state secretary of Catherine II, real secret adviser, historian, poet and translator. Graduated from the land gentry corps (1738-1743). Served in the army (Colonel; 1757). In 1758 he was arrested in the case of Chancellor A. P. Bestuzheva-Ryumin and Soslan (1759) to his estate near Kazan. After the coup 1762 he was among the proxies of Catherine II. Deputy of the Commission on the composition of the project of the new Code (from the nobles of the Pustorzhevsky district). Director of the Court Theater (1766-1779). Passionate Theater and Meloman. Member of the Russian Academy (1783). Famous Mason (1750). Senator. Hofmeister (1773), Ober-Hofmeister (1782). In 1789 he began to write “Experience of the narrative of Russia” (brought it to 1574; m., 1803. H. I. 1-3). Depicted with the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky (star; 1773).
