The state of safety before restoration:

The icon was written by the artist in 1810 for the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The basis for the work was a massive plate of pressed multilayer cardboard with a thickness of about 2.5 cm, which is directly the door in the iconostasis. The initiator of the construction of the cathedral A.With. Stroganov subsequently noted the advantage of cardboard over a tree in a changeable climate of St. Petersburg.[1] Upon admission to the restoration of the edge of the multilayer plate, there were significant stratification and loss. In addition, there were internal stratification of cardboard in the middle part in the form of hollow spaces.

Painting in separate areas had a bad connection with the basis. The thick film of the covering varnish turned yellow and closed in places. The author’s colorful layer was overlapped by numerous late correspondence. Under the extensive record above the image of the head, painted fragments of letters were visible. The surface of the picture was under a thick layer of soot and dust pollution, hiding the author’s flavor and picturesque construction.

Complex of the events:

The stratification of the base was strengthened, the nail openings and loss of the base were covered with paper mass, the internal connection between the sheets of multi -layer cardboard was restored.

Persistent pollutions are removed from the painting, a layout of the varnish and removal of records are made. In the process of clearing against the background, the author’s inscription “Holy Archidacon Philip” was opened, and the author’s configuration of the fingers, previously hidden by records, was restored on the image of the right hand.

At the final stage, the places of loss are tinted, the painting is covered with a protective layer of varnish. As a result of restoration measures, the foundation is strengthened and stabilized, author’s color sound and original picturesque construction were returned with a colorful layer.
