The artist is Ivanov
AND.And.Ivanov – from representatives of the Russian Academic School of the late XVIII – beginning of XIX in. He created works on historical, mythological, biblical plots. The idea of citizenship and patriotism was embodied in his most significant works. The plot of this picture is described in the annals. According to her in 6530 (1022), the Tmutarakan prince Mstislav Vladimirovich “Brave” acted as a campaign against Kasogs. Upon learning of this, the Supreme Prince of the Adyghe Union of Rededa, who had great physical strength, went to meet the enemy. Both troops met on the territory of the Sagin tribe bordering Tmutarakanan Russia. Rededa suggested Mstislav, in order to avoid bloodshed, to solve the case with a fight on the condition that the winner would take a family, land and everything, including the life of the defeated. During martial arts, Mstislav began to lose strength, but in the end he still managed to defeat Rededa. Having plunged his opponent, Mstislav killed him. Subsequently, Mstislav attributed his victory to the intercession of the Virgin, whom he prayed during the battle.
The work was built in compliance with all the norms of classic art: a balanced composition in which two central figures of athletes make up a conditional triangle in the center of the canvas, local color contrasts, clarity of the contours and a sharp light -of -volume modeling of volumes – all this contributes to the unambiguous reader of the plot and focuses on its main Heroes. The artist depicts the final stage of the struggle, the outcome of which is awaiting the troops in the background: Mstislav stands above the defeated Kluman prince, and the image of glory soars over his head. Thus, the artist in a peculiar allegorical form responded to events that took place 790 years later, in 1812, when Napoleon’s troops invaded the territory of Russia. For this canvas in the year of its writing and.And.Ivanov received the title of professor, in the accompanying documents it was written: "The picture represents the battle of the Russian warrior with the Pecheneg, whose victory brought the name of Pereyaslavl to the offspring". According to researchers, this plot is taken from "Ancient Russian history" M.AT.Lomonosov and reflected in the “Word of Igor’s Regiment”. In 1943, the appeal to this event became the reason for Nikolai Roerich to talk about the radical fracture that occurred during the Great Patriotic War ("Martial arts of Mstislav with Rededa", 1943. Zh-7088. Timing).
