Lanskaya Alexander Dmitrievich (1758–1784) – son of a poor Smolensk nobleman. He began serving in the Life Guards of the Izmailovsky regiment by a soldier (1772), cavalry guard (from 1776), outbuilding adjutant (1779), chamberlain (1780), Major General, Chef of the Smolensk Dragoon Regiment. Cavalier of many Russian and foreign orders. Adjutant General with production in the-generals (1784). Art lover, collector.

Depicted in the uniform of the major general of engineering troops with the orders of St. Stanislav (on the neck), the star and tape of the Order of the White Eagle (Poland).

The portrait was written in 1782 at the request of Catherine II, in love with a 22-year-old officer. Lanskaya, whom the empress showered with all kinds of merits, is represented in the Adjutant General. The evidence was preserved that Levitsky managed to please the customer: “The empress appreciated this portrait so that she did not part with him until her death”.
