This small picturesque canvas belongs to the number of the most emotional works of the Russian landscape school. A monotonous panorama of a plain landscape, meager vegetation, dilapidated rural buildings create a painful mood of sadness and hopelessness pain. The travelers stopped on the road, which sharply goes to the side, leaving them as if at a crossroads. This state was consonant with the perception of post -reform Russian reality by the contemporaries of the artist. It is no coincidence that the picture (GTG) received the first prize of the Society for the Promotion of Artists and was repeated by order of Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich (GRM).
