The artist often turned to the image of rural landscapes after summer rain. Their composition is controlled by the theme of the road leaving into the distance. Lonely peasant figures leading cattle, an indispensable element of landscapes of this type, give excitation to the emotional system of paintings. In this landscape, the motive of the road acquires a philosophical meaning. In the image of a broken blackened hedge, blurred by rains of a rocky road, not only thoughts about the hardships of rustic life, but also elegiac sentiments. Light spots of the puddle on the road, lit by a sunlight, a strip of bread field, echoing with each other, oppose a gloomy color scheme of a rainy day and add optimistic notes to the general artistic solution of the landscape. The finest “sincere nerves” that make it possible to listen to “noise and music in nature”, landscape painter Fedor Vasiliev was endowed with. This is one of the best works of the artist.
