The line of centuries is always a stress-dramatic period, the time of shock and anxious expectation of the future, but this is the time of hopes for the best future. In Russia, the New XIX century began with the palace coup and murder of Paul I, behind the accession to the throne of Alexander I and the hope of the “days of the Aleksandrovs of the Beautiful Principle”, followed by the Napoleonic wars, the uprising of the Decembrists, their execution and repression. And against this historical background, an incredible flowering of Russian culture occurs – a brilliant Pushkin time occurs. In Russian art of this period, the role of architecture is especially great. Therefore, it is no coincidence that among the works of the first half of the 19th century, the central place is occupied by portraits of the three great Russian architects – Andrei Voronikhin, Carlo Rossi and Andreyan Zakharov.

If the Catherine’s reign left behind the majestic and luxurious palaces, then in Alexander the time urban planning tasks and the construction of public buildings were of paramount importance, which corresponded to the civilian ideals of the era. The new classic appearance of St. Petersburg, his “strict, harmonious appearance”, sung by Pushkin, was created by a whole galaxy of talented Russian architects.

One of the outstanding monuments of the early Russian Empire was the new building of the Admiralty, the project of which was approved in 1805 by Alexander I, who personally monitored all significant buildings. Its author was architect Andreyan Dmitrievich Zakharov. An elderly, wise life, tired, appears in the portrait written by his youth by artist Schukin.
