View on the Volga. Barki

The artist is Vasiliev

The artist was much ahead of the development of the landscape genre in Russian art. He sought to convey not so much a specific full -scale motive or notable appearance as to express the life of nature, its state. Often he was attracted by the tension of natural forces in front of a thunderstorm or enlightenment after the rain. The sky, the movement of the clouds succeeded in him like no one else. The artist was convinced of the high public purpose of art, endlessly believed in his powerful ennoble power.

This landscape, created during the trip to the Volga together with and. E. Repin and e. To. Makarov, testifies to the romantically enthusiastic perception of the world as its author. For the line of the 1860–1870s, this picture turned out to be the top of the picturesque achievements of the domestic landscape.
