The artist is Vereshchagin
The canvas belongs to the so -called Turkestan series. In those years, contemporaries sometimes called the artist "Vereshchagin-Tashkent" Unlike painters-one-fan. The artist was fond of ethnography of the East to no less than battal scenes, and, as a rule, captured the audience with the unusual plots and their interpretation.
The picture was written, like most paintings, based on the field work made during the stay in Central Asia, where the artist conceived and performed a number of genre compositions. The canvas depicts a portal revered by the Muslims of the shrine-the Gazret-Yasavi mosque (Gazrei-Vassavi), at the door of which the poor were perished. The artist sought to convey in his picture the idea of the decline and degeneration of the once luxurious and formidable feudal civilization, which he devoted to the composition solved in the same way "Tamerlan doors" (1872–1873, Tretyakov Gallery).
