Being a military man who served at the St. Petersburg cartridge factory, Yaroshenko studied in 1864-1874 at the drawing school of the Society for the Promotion of Arts U. N. Kramskoy, and was also a free listener at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1867–1874). Since 1876 – one of the leaders of the partnership of mobile art exhibitions. After the death of Kramsky, he became his ideological successor. Contemporaries called him "Conscience of artists".

Kramskoy Ivan Nikolaevich (1837–1887)- painter, portraitist, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (since 1869). Born near Ostrogozhsk Voronezh province. In his youth he worked as a retoucher at the capital’s photographers. Studied at the Academy of Arts at A. T. Markova (1857–1863). Initiator and participant "The rebellion of fourteen". The organizer and ideological head of the St. Petersburg artel of artists, who became a prototype of the future partnership of mobile art exhibitions. He taught at the drawing school of the Society for the Promotion of Artists (1863–1868). Made trips to European countries (1869, 1876, 1884). One of the creators of the genre of socio-psychological portrait, author of the gallery of portraits of contemporaries-writers, artists, figures of science and culture and peasants. Created a number of works on historical and literary plots. Author of critical articles on contemporary art. Left a large and valuable epistolary heritage.
