The cat snapps guests “. The Russian Museum contains the option of the 1848 picture of the same name (Tretyakov Gallery), for which the artist was awarded the title of Academician.
Of all the characters of the picture, the groom himself is least interested in the artist. It is depicted in the background, as a figure, necessary only to explain the cause of the commotion in the merchant house. The remaining characters of the paintings are divided into groups, each of which develops its own plot-shaped line within the theme of the picture. In the center of the composition is a runaway bride and a mother trying to keep her. The interaction of these characters is one of the main lines of the development of the plot. Obeying the will of the artist, the viewer goes from character to the character, all of them are connected by a gesture or pose. Thus, a kind of "The composition of the movement". The method of grouping actors itself is a new technique for Russian genre painting. The artist has a room and actors so that the viewer creates an involuntary feeling that he looked out the window and saw a commotion reigning in a merchant house. “Matchmaking” came to us in two versions. Fedotov revised the repetition of his picture. Despite the fact that the picture is small in size, it is very careful in decoration. As an explanation of K "Major’s matchmaking" Fedotov says a poetic work – the famous "Racea". The picture says:
“About how people live in the world,
How others live on someone else’s expense,
They themselves are lazy to work,
So they get married on the rich “.

Pavel Andreevich Fedotov (1815-1852) – founder of a completely new genre of a household satirical picture for Russia. He is known for his small canvases for stories from life "poor people": citizens, officials, servants, military, merchants and philistines, created a real encyclopedia of Russian urban life of his time.
