By the time of the creation of this famous picture, which became the top of its first, romantic, period, the painter managed to gain international fame and recognition among the largest authorities. Features of the work of the master are traced here exclusively brightly and definitely.
The theme of the picture was the confrontation of the forces of nature and the will of man. The artist reached the previously unprecedented in the Russian landscape of drama, exciting the strength of the experience, a sonorous coloristic system. The ninth shaft is coming – the most formidable, most destructive, most powerful wave, according to the people who are among the people. But the darkness of the night has already been cut through by the light of hope, a desperate will to salvation, gives up, the raging ocean will win. Of course, this picture was to be perceived in an allegorical sense, to gain a symbolic meaning for many generations, to inspire faith in the victory of man, humanity, life.
The artist wrote his canvases from memory, in the workshop. According to the author, "The movements of the living elements are elusive for the brush: to write a zipper, a gust of wind, a surge of the wave is unthinkable from nature. The plot of the picture is composed in my memory, as the plot of the poet from the poet".
The picture was acquired for the Russian Gallery of the Hermitage and became one of the first paintings in the collection of the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III opened in 1898.
