The confrontation between Peter I reform began in the family of the emperor himself. His son from his first marriage – Tsarevich Alexei opposed his father’s will. However, the conspiracy was discovered and the prince fled abroad, from where he was returned by order of Peter I. In Russia, the Senate, with the consent of his father, sentenced the prince to the death penalty. In order to truthfully recreate this historical episode, which became the basis of the plot of the picture, the artist carefully studied the documents and portraits of Peter I and Tsarevich, costumes of the beginning of the 18th century, and also accurately reproduced the office of the emperor in the Monplezir Palace in Petershof. The work is a repetition of the 1871 picture of the same name, located in the Tretyakov Gallery.
