During the pensioner business trip, a young artist torn from the usual environment took advantage of the folklore theme to express his condition and mood.

In the picture, painted on the plot of the Novgorod epic, the merchant Sadko is depicted in the underwater kingdom. From the mysterious green-blue underwater depths, a string of “brides” defile in front of the hero standing on the right, dressed in a fur coat and a fur hat, moves on the viewer. Overseas beauties personify, according to Repin, various countries and peoples. But the Sadko admiring them chooses the wife in the depths of the Russian girl Chernava. "The idea expresses my current position and, perhaps, the situation of all Russian still art",- the artist wrote at that time.

In search of artistic techniques adequate to the expression of the conceived image, he was helped by the impression of the magnificent entertainment of the European salon. As always, striving for extreme authenticity, Repin studied the atlases of the sea world, sketched the sea living creatures in Normandy, studied the features of the color of sea water in the aquarium of Berlin, examined the crystal palace in London. After a long search for harmonious color transitions on canvas, the illusion of the depth of water space was born.

For the title character he posed in.M. Vasnetsov (portrait study is stored in the GTG); There are also studies of individual “beauties”, in the corresponding poses. The painting itself is “in academic” smooth; The viewer is as if fenced off from everything that happens with a thick glass of the aquarium. The light is served from above, highlighting the Center of the Podium, which the procession participants should be passed. Significant heroes are pushed “to the periphery” and connected only by the diagonal of the look.

Repin created a memorable fairy -tale artistic image in which there is a necessary balance between the real and composed world.

In 1876, he received the title of academician for his monumental canvas. Then the thing was bought by the Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, the future emperor Alexander III.
