Venetianov Alexei Gavrilovich (1780–1847) – painter, genre, portrait painter. Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1811).

Born in Moscow in a merchant family. In 1802 he moved to Petersburg. From 1807 to 1819 he was in the public service – he served as an official in the postal and then forest departments. I began to engage in painting late, independently. I took lessons in in.L. Borovikovsky, copied paintings in the Hermitage. Began creative activities as a portraitist. In 1807 he undertook the publication of a satirical magazine, which was prohibited by the government. In 1812-1813 he participated in the creation of a large series of cartoons for the events of war with Napoleon. Made many drawings on household topics.
From 1819 – retired, completely devoted himself to painting. Lived in his estate of the Safonkovo ​​Tver province. Created a school in which he accepted serfs and children from poor families. Author of a number of notes about art and teaching methods.
Since the 1820s, the theme of labor and life of the peasants became the main thing in his work, he attached the significance of an independent genre of painting to peasant themes.
