Portrait of a naval officer

The artist is unknown

Dated by the shape of a hairstyle. Depicted in the uniform of the captain of the i-th rank with the Order of St. George 4th degree. The portrait is characterized by professionalism, an obvious desire for emotional expressiveness, exquisite coloristic restraint. It is very possible that he goes back to the original Russian master of the second half of the 18th century, but the prototype has not yet been clarified. The rank of a marine officer depicted and the presence of a noticeable military award has a warden – the Order of St. George-suggest that the depicted was a participant in the Russo-Turkish war of 1777-1778. Further study of the portrait does not exclude the possibility of determining the author of the picturesque image. The character’s name is even more likely.
