The picture depicts the area that Empress Catherine II visited in 1787 during her trip to the south of Russia. It was written by the artist on the basis of sketches from nature, made by him in 1795-1797 during a trip to the south of Russia, perfectly “to remove the types of areas” visited by the empress.

Bakhchisaray – the capital of the Crimean Khanate, annexed to Russia in 1783. The city square is depicted next to the Khan’s palace. On the left is the wall of the harem, above it is a falcon tower. On the right the mosque khan-jami with two minarets. The program is obvious in the image of stuffage: Russian officers with families are adjacent to the eastern horsemen in the turban, on the left is a walking rabbi with a sweatshirt. Catherine II visited Bakhchisaray in May 1787 during her trip to Russia and spent several days here.
