The state of safety before restoration:
The picture was painted on a thick pressed cardboard, which eventually acquired a general deformation in the form of “bulge”. The edges of the cardboard were badly damaged, relaxed, there were creases in the corners. Detachment of a colorful layer and soil, as well as partially the upper layer of cardboard, created numerous hollow bubbles. Sections of the raised craquelure created a threat. Old preventive braces recorded the most emergency sections of the surface. Extensive notes made at different times, given the existence of the icon in the cathedral, were doving and largely closed the author’s painting. They changed in tone and color and violated the artistic perception of the work. Thick varnish and pollution between the varnish layers made a picture even darker.
Complex of the events:
The cardboard base was strengthened, broken breaks and holes along the edges, relaxing areas were glued, glue was summed up into the places of hollow bubbles and the lags of the colorful layer and soil, the surface was leveled. After removing persistent surface pollution, layout was performed. The most difficult was the site in the lower part to the right of the figure, where the folds and background were completely rewritten several times. After removal of the correspondence, a continuous overload of the site applied by gray oil was opened. Trial clearings showed that under the overloading there are also a layer of varnish and records, and only under them is the author’s colorful layer. The author’s layer is severely worn, but, nevertheless, after opening allows you to restore the author’s image of the folds. At the final stage, after the removal of all the late layers, tinting was made in the places of loss. The section of strong scuffs in the lower part was tinted in the Puantel technique, which allowed to restore the author’s drawing and maintain the airiness and translucent of the background inherent in the author’s painting.
