The plot of the picture was one of the heroic episodes of the ancient annals. In 968, when the army of Prince Svyatoslav was on a distant campaign, the nomads of the pennies besieged Kyiv. The hero of the picture is an unknown young Kievite. Knowing the language of the Pechenegs, he walked with a bridle in his hands through an enemy camp. When the enemies entangled him, the young man replied that he was looking for a runaway horse. A binding of the Dnieper, he found a Russian squad and brought it to the aid of the besieged city.

Like a whirlwind, the hero rushes through the enemy camp, and reaching the Dnieper – a narrow strip of water at the lower edge of the picture – as it were, listens to the sounds of the chase.
