Emperor Pavel I Petrovich (1754–1801) is the only son of Emperor Peter III and Empress Catherine II. In 1762 he was declared the heir to the throne with the title of Tsarevich. He received a brilliant education, romantically believed in the ideals of enlightened absolutism, but critically referred to the policy of Catherine II. For decades, he languished in anticipation of the authorities usurped mother. Since 1796 – Emperor. Sought to the good of the state, but often acted contrary to common sense. Narrowed the rights of the nobility, allowing bodily punishment for him. The special manifesto banned the departure of corvee on holidays, resurrection and more than three days a week. Military reforms affected not only uniforms and weapons, but also training, tactics of officers and soldiers of the Russian army. The slope was made towards the Prussian military school. In 1798, he adopted the title of the Grand Master of the Order of the Club John of Jerusalem (the Order of the Hospitallers), taking it under his patronage.

The unpopularity of Paul I decisions in domestic and foreign policy caused many dignitaries, courtiers, officers, members of the imperial family uncertainty and fear for their future. On the night of March 11 to March 12, 1801, the emperor was brutally killed, and according to the official version, he died from an apoplexy blow (paralysis).

The emperor is depicted in the robe of the grandmaster of the Maltese Order: in the Black Order Mantle with an eight -pointed white Maltese cross. On the head is a silver gilded Maltese crown. On the neck on the gold chain, the Cross of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. On the chest is the blue tape of the Order of St. Andrew the First -Called, on top of it – the puntes knightly scarf. Left on the table – the regalia of the master.
