Vasily Grigoryevich Perov was a passionate hunter, and the topic of hunting attracted him throughout his creative activity ("Rybolov", 1871; "Botanist", 1874; "Dove", 1874; "Fishing", 1878, "Birds", 1879 and others.). Picture "Hunters on a halt" The artist painted in 1877 (a picture with the same name 1871 of creation is stored in the GTG).

The picture depicts three hunters on vacation. On the left, probably an experienced hunter from impoverished nobles with enthusiasm and passion telling about his “exploits”. The prototype for him became D. P. Kuvshinnikov, a well -known doctor and a great fan of gun hunting. After the exhibiting of the picture, his name became popular in literary, art and theatrical circles, and in the apartment in the small of the Three -Consusite Lane were often in. G. Perov, a. P. Chekhov, and. O. Levitan and others.

In the background, a man is depicted in the second way, in Russian peasant clothes, incredulously and with a grin listening to hunting bikes. The model for him was also the doctor and amateur artist in. AT. Bessonov. On the right is a dressed young newcomer dressed “from a needle”, with awe, listening to the stories of an experienced hunter. For this image, the artist posed a 26-year-old n. M. Nagornov, friend and colleague D. P. Kuvshinnikov and c. AT. Bessonova. Soon after writing the picture, he married the niece of the great writer in. AT. Tolstoy, and in the early 1890s became a member of the Moscow City Council.

The work was exhibited in 1869 at the World Exhibition in Paris.
