When preparing the exposition of the Tauride exhibition, Diaghilev had to examine the storerooms of many museums during 1904, to inspect dozens of private collections, and drive literally all of Russia. In the intervals between travels, he sat in the archives, looked through magazines and books. And when portraits began to come in hundreds – a new difficult task: it was necessary to classify everything, organize an artistic whole, arrange an exhibition, hang portraits so that they would talk as much as possible and say everything about Russian life, culture and art of two hundred years.

The exhibiting of the works of his beloved master of the 18th century – Dmitry Levitsky – Diaghilev paid special attention. Among the many beautiful paintings of Levitsky, portrait a.F.Kokorinova, architect and rector of the Academy of Arts. Together with the w.-B. Wallen-Graduate took part in the design and construction of the building of the Academy of Arts.

In this portrait, Levitsky demonstrates free possession of picturesque skills and good knowledge of the techniques of creating complex compositional portraits. The figure of the portraited, depicted in an academic uniform, is located in the center and clearly reads against the background. Around – accessories carrying a large semantic load: on the left on the table – a sheet with the plan of the Academy building and a large academic seal, behind – a cabinet for storing the academic treasury. This portrait revealed all the features of Levitsky’s art: exquisite selection of colors, amazing skill in transmitting textures of various materials, skillful setting of the figure and a convincing characteristic of the face.

In 1770, Levitsky at a large academic exhibition for a portrait of Kokorinov was awarded the title of academician.
