Portrait painter.
Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (since 1770). Member of the Council of the Academy of Arts (from 1808).
Born in Kyiv. The initial artistic skills received with his father – a hereditary priest, a famous engraver of g.To. Levitsky.
Studied with a. P. Anthropova since 1758, worked in the Commonwealth with him, in particular, on the design of coronation celebrations related to the accession to the throne of Catherine II (1762). Wrote icons for Moscow churches. He taught at the Academy of Arts, led the class of portrait painting (1771–1788). In the 1800s, due to illness, he was forced to leave painting.
Author of numerous portraits of contemporaries. His famous suite "Smolinki", Completed by the court to decorate the Great Peterhof Palace, is a unique phenomenon in Russian art of the second half of the 18th century.
